Frosty morning on the Drillfield (Taken with Instagram at Drillfield)

Virginia Tech’s Drillfield is one of the most unique features about our campus. As the university has grown over the last century, one thing has remained constant — the 22-acre open space that every Hokie knows. By the end of your first semester on campus, you knew, almost to the second, how long it would take to cross the Drillfield to get to your next class.

But did you know that before it was the Drillfield, it was called Sheib Field, named for Edward E. Sheib, a professor of English and history who helped to financially support the football team in the late 1800s.

There’s a lot more history behind the Drillfield than most Hokies realize and you can read about it by clicking on the photo above.
