Having grown up in a military family, I have always had a deep appreciation and respect for the men and women who serve in our nation’s armed forces. My grandfather fought in Vietnam; dad served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force; mom was a career civil servant; my brother served in the U.S. Navy; and my cousin served in the U.S. Army, just to name a few.
My best friend from high school graduated from Virginia Tech, is an alumnus of the corps of cadets, and has made a career as an officer in the Army. He recently returned home to his wife and two sons from a tour of duty in Afghanistan.
On Friday, April 9, Virginia Tech added another name to the Ut Prosim Pylon at the War Memorial. U.S. Marine Corps Capt. David Seth Mitchell, a 2001 graduate, was killed last October while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan. The video above contains photos taken from the memorial ceremony held in his honor on Friday, April 9. May he rest in peace.
