Congratulations to New York Mets third baseman and proud Virginia Tech supporter David Wright on being named the club’s 2013 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award.

Wright was born and raised in Virginia and is a lifelong Hokies fan. One of his younger brothers studied engineering at Virginia Tech.

Wright was drafted by the New York Mets in 2001 and made his Major League Baseball debut in 2004. A year later he established The David Wright Foundation.

Following the tragic events of April 16, 2007, Wright’s foundation started an endowed scholarship fund at Virginia Tech, which provides a full four-year scholarship for an engineering student at the school in honor of the victims.
