I stopped by Virginia Tech’s new Visitor and Undergraduate Admissions Center this morning to check out the new digs and see how the move was going. It looks like everyone is pretty much moved in and ready to open next week.
The old visitor center (on Southgate Drive) and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions were closed this week while they moved into this beautiful new building that was partly paid for with money from donors.
Today, I actually got to go inside and check out some of the cool new interactive displays that will greet visitors beginning next Tuesday, July 5. And, I even recorded a short video to give you a little sneak peek.
So, the next time you’re in Blacksburg (after July 5), make sure you stop by the new visitor center located next to the Inn at Virginia Tech and see for yourself!

One of the more memorable features of Virginia Tech’s campus is the university’s War Memorial. It was a gift from alumni to their alma mater and features eight pylons, each inscribed with one of the following values: Brotherhood, Duty, Honor, Leadership, Loyalty, Sacrifice, Service and Ut Prosim (Latin for “That I May Serve,” which is the university motto).
The Pylons also inspired the name of a Virginia Tech giving society. People who donate to academics in two or more consecutive years — as measured on a fiscal calendar which runs July 1 to June 30 — qualify for membership in the Pylon Society.
Today is the first day of transfer orientation at Virginia Tech. Welcome to all our new Hokies! How about a little Monday morning trivia?
Did you know that the first woman to graduate from Virginia Tech was a transfer student? What was her name and from what school did she transfer? Click here for a hint!
Recognize this building at Virginia Tech? Any Hokie worth their salt knows this is Burruss Hall. But did you know that it is named for the university’s eighth president, Julian Ashby Burruss, who served in that role from 1919-1945? Burruss is responsible for admitting women to Virginia Tech as full-time students and for reducing the four-year cadet requirement to just two years, which allowed the university to attract a larger civilian student population.
